Calcite is a set of minimal hanging and floor lamps created by the London – based designer Romain Voulet. The unrefined piece of marble of industrial processing has become a unique piece of illumination. Calcite was born after a trip to Barcelona, where the designer visited the pavilion Mies van der Rohe. Observing the use of such noble materials as marble, onyx, granite, the designer took this knowledge as a starting point.
The pendant lamp was first developed in a combination of technologies and one of the most ancient materials. This alliance creates an attractive tension between the eternal nature of the stone and the obsolescence of technology. Here, the cut of marble becomes an interval, a break between two CNC mechanical parts, like a silence between notes which makes music. Marble natural qualities are used to dissipate heat from a LED source, as well as to ensure proper hovering or a “float Ness” lamp with its mass.
With its timeless properties, the luminaires can easily be placed in different environments. In apartments, offices, hotels, it can be an excellent addition to the existing interior or on the contrary, it can serve as a stand-alone self-sufficient and functional interior object.
